Sao Paulo, October 9, 2018 – Biolins, JBS’s thermoelectric plant (TEP), has the capacity to generate 45 MW of power from renewable sources, sufficient to supply a city of 300 thousand inhabitants. All the unit’s raw materials come from sustainable sources, such as sugarcane bagasse and wood chips from reforestation.
Over the past two years, production capacity has increased following over R$ 50 million in investment. In this industry, expansion and equipment modernization (changing the turbine, generator and other items) is necessary, and “we look for solutions from the world’s biggest technology centers. This helps accelerate the return on our capital investment. Following modernization, we have one of the most efficient biomass plants in Brazil”, said Oreste J. Trombetta, a JBS Biolins executive.
The plant supplies the Lins industrial complex in Sao Paulo. Excess power is distributed to the electricity system and used at other JBS units. The company currently has 250 direct and indirect employees and generates over R$ 100 million in revenues across the region.
As electricity costs are rising across the industry, JBS is paying close attention to new opportunities to increase in-house power output using renewable sources in order to cut costs sustainably.
