The Company was recognized for its sustainable practices in the Forestry and Water categories
Sao Paulo, March 2, 2018 – JBS has been acknowledged for its corporate sustainability practices, according to the criteria established by the CDP, an international organization. During the 2017 edition of CDP Supply Chain, the Company was highlighted in the Forestry and Water modules, achieving an A- grade in both categories.
“This recognition is evidence we are moving ahead with our sustainability strategy and policy in areas that are very important to JBS. Over the years, the company has made significant investments in order to improve our sustainability standards throughout the production chain, both in-house and with our suppliers”, said Marcio Nappo, JBS’s Sustainability director.
Sustainability management at JBS focuses on five strategic issues that underpin all Company operations worldwide: occupational health & safety; animal well-being; water resource management; product quality and integrity and climate change.
The CDP Supply Chain program helps companies build engagement strategies to engage suppliers on a collaborative basis and sustainably develop the value chain. Assessments are carried out via suppliers, who answer a questionnaire on risks and opportunities linked with climate change, water security and activities to reduce deforestation.
JBS was highlighted in the CDP Supply Chain Forests module, which evaluates information from the agricultural commodity supply chain (palm oil, soybeans, cattle and timber) on policy actions to prevent deforestation associated with those products.
In the CDP Supply Chain Water category, JBS was highlighted for its Sustainable Water Management Program, created to manage and mitigate water management risk exposure, and its various initiatives to improve processes, reduce water consumption and implement water reuse alternatives at all units. Another area highlighted by the CDP is the company’s sustainability governance structure, headed by its management-led Sustainability Committee.
The CDP scores show each company’s progress in each of the four categories: Information disclosure (graded D- and D), awareness (graded C- and C), management (graded B- and B) and leadership, which is described as the adoption of best practices (graded A and A-).
CDP is one of the main global platforms for monitoring the corporate sustainability policies of large companies. Their informational content is used by the financial markets to evaluate the environmental risks companies pose. More than 5,600 organizations worldwide currently report their data to CDP.
